According to Ayurveda everything in this world of the following 5 elements and 3 bilogical forces or Doshas. Find out the foods which will help balance these forces according to your dominant doshas.
Our body is made of five natural elements.
- Prithvi (Earth)
- APA (Water)
- Tejas(Fire)
- Vayu(Air)
- Akash(Space)
In human body these five elements are expressed in the form of three biological forces, called Doshas.
Doshas are functional energies in the body.
- VATA
- PITA
- KAPHA
Everyone has these three doshas operating in their body but in different proportions. There will be one or two dominant doshas and the physical constitution or characteristics of an individual are based on the dominant dosha.
Vata
Comprises of the elements air and space( or ether) and is responsible for movement related functions in the body. eg. circulation, respiration and general movement of the body and the thoughts.
Vata person is normally thin, with wiry ans small structure and appearance.
Pitta
Composed of fire and is responsible for metabolism related activities. eg. digestion of food. This biological force is related to courage and ambitions on the positive side and anger and pride on the negative side. The life experiences are manifested through Pitta.
Pitta person will may be muscular and of medium size.
Kapha
Composed of water and earth elements. Responsible for cohesion and structural support to body. On the positive side it governs the emotions like devotion and love and on the negative side governs the emotions like greed and jealousy.
Kapha person tends to have large structure, heavy bones and a tendency to be overweight.
These three doshas are collectively known as TriDosha ( three doshas).
Everyone has a unique combination of these Tridosha according to their constitution (nature or prakriti). The food we eat and our lifestyle and emotions increase or decrease a particular dosha.
The main dosha is the most dominant one
The secondary dosha will be one in next highest proportion.
So a person can be classified as
- Vata person
- Pitta person
- Kapha person
- Vata-Pitta person
- Vata-Kapha person
- Pitta-Kapha person
- Vata-Pitta-Kapha person
When a person has a normal health then the tridosha are in equilibrium. But when one or more doshas gets aggravated then our body tends to deteriorate. Depending on the dosha which is aggrevated we will have health issues related to that dosha. The impact is on the physical, emotional health as well as appearance. The ayurvedic doctors can simply check your pulse and tell you your disposition and tell you which doshas are aggravated. They can also tell the diseases you might be suffering by just feeling your pulse.
Without going in too much detail, let me come to the point. I wanted to present the chart which tells which food is allowed and not allowed for each dosha aggravation. In the following pages you would find the list of the foods which are suitable for each of the three doshas and also the foods which should be avoided for each Dosha which is aggravated or out of balance.
